New Initiative
Chicago Gateway Green has been a proud contributor to Chicago's urban forest for over ten years. Through the Expressway Partnership, we have planted over 3,000 trees and hundreds of thousands of perennials and shrubs.

In 2008, we increased this effort in an exciting new initiative focused solely on planting trees within Chicago. In addition to our work on the expressways, we'll be moving into Chicago's neighborhoods to contribute to the greening of our great city. Read about our first planting.

Sponsor a tree!
Plant a tree in celebration of a great event (Congratulations on the new baby!), in honor of mom and dad (Happy Anniversary!), in memory of a loved one, or just because green is good. I mean, who doesn't like trees? With your help , we can continue to make our city green and healthy for generations to come. Sponsor a Tree Here.

Importance of maintenance
We don’t just plant trees and hope for their survival. Our tree planting initiative aims for success with a solid after-planting maintenance plan, where newly-installed trees will receive three years of care including mulching, bi-monthly watering, and ongoing inspections to keep them healthy in Chicago’s tough urban growing environment. It costs us $300 to purchase, plant, and maintain one of our native hardwood saplings.

The majority of the trees we’ll be planting are also chosen for their native, and therefore hardy, qualities. These native trees such as Oaks, Hackberry and Kentucky Coffee Tree are grown in special root bags, which hold more of the sapling’s critical root mass and provide a jump start for the trees initial growth.
